Beekeeping 101

December 7, 2021 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Beekeeper inspecting a hive

Join the Union County Wildlife Chapter online, or in-person at the Union County Agricultural Center, for a presentation on beekeeping and why we care about honeybees with beekeeper Sheila Jeffrey.

Sheila Jeffrey became interested in keeping bees through her husband (currently the president of the Union County NC Beekeepers Association Club). He attended a Beekeeping School in Mecklenburg county in the 1990s. It was not until 2013 when they moved to Marshville and acquired land that her husband set up an apiary, where Sheila helped informally on occasion. Sheila became a Certified BeeKeeper in 2018 after retiring from a 40-year corporate career in banking information technology. Since then she’s assisted in taking care of their bees and helping with honey extraction. She is an active UCNCBA member, Bee School organizer and presenter, and Board Director. Ed and Sheila are now sideliners, selling their NC Certified Honey Producers honey under the ‘Long Run Farm LLC’ name at a couple retail outlets. They have sixteen hives and extracted 160 – 170 lbs. of honey in both 2019 and 2020, and over 300 lbs in 2021. Sheila also became a certified Union County Extension Volunteer Master Gardener Association member in 2018, and has been an active volunteer and Board Member ever since.
