Educational Bird Walk (Gatesville)
February 21, 2026 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Join NCWF Wildlife Habitat Stewards of Northeastern NC Chapter for an educational Bird Walk! Come explore the beautiful Coleman Trail at Merchants Millpond State Park on Saturday, February 21, from 10 am – 12 pm.
We’re excited to have Skadi Kylander leading the walk. Skadi is a passionate birder with a biology degree from Chowan University and ongoing PhD research at East Carolina University, where she studies Prothonotary Warblers and their nesting habits. She is knowledgeable about the birds of Merchants Millpond and loves sharing that knowledge with others.
As we walk along the trail, we’ll look and listen for local bird species. We’ll have field guides and other resources on hand, and you’re encouraged to bring our phone. Skadi will show you how to use the Merlin and iNaturalist apps to help identify and document what you discover. Feel free to bring binoculars or a camera, and we’ll also have a spotting scope available for those moments when a bird or waterfowl decides to pose.
The Coleman Trail is an easy, family-friendly 2-mile loop starting right from the Boat Access Parking area. Participants under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
