Magnificent Migratory Birds of the Pungo Unit

February 5 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

snow geese in flight migrating

Take a Walk on the Wild side and experience a waterfowl feast for the eyes at the Pungo Unit of Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. Join NCWF’s Katerina Ramos on a birdwatching adventure featuring migratory snow geese, tundra swan and red-winged blackbirds. Catch a glimpse while learning about waterfowl migratory patterns, why these enormous flocks make the refuge their winter home, and how moist soil and farm fields play a significant role in their habitat. This Walks on the Wild Side event is free and open to the public but space is limited and registration is required.

The program starts at the kiosk located at Pungo Observation Deck. There will be a guided 20-mile drive around the Pungo Unit, with stops along the way and opportunities to observe and learn about the wildlife and their habitat. A restroom is located at the kiosk, but there aren’t any facilities available during the tour. The entire tour is accessible.

Please note: The refuge is remote (come with a full gas tank!) and at times, the terrain can become extremely wet and impassable by cars. Only 4-wheel drive vehicles can make the drive from the kiosk to the viewing area. Attendees who don’t have a 4-wheel drive vehicle will be matched up with someone who does. Event organizers will assess refuge conditions the day before the tour and make adjustments if needed.
