Good Bug, Bad Bug: A primer on beneficial insects and pests (Monroe or Online)
March 14, 2024 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Join us in March as we learn all about insects! Annie Howell will join us to share her insect collection and discuss the basics of beneficial insects and garden pests. Anne-Marie (Annie) Howell graduated from college in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Fordham University. She has always had a passion for gardening, plants and especially butterflies.
After completing the Union County Extension Master Gardener program in 2009, and armed with in depth plant and gardening knowledge, she has taken her passion to a whole new level. Her quarter-acre backyard is a Certified Wildlife Habitat, with host plants for more than six varieties of butterflies and myriad nectar plants. Since then, with her daughter Nikki’s help, her impressive butterfly and “bug” collection has grown to over 100 specimens. Since she became a volunteer for the Union County Wildlife Chapter of the NC Wildlife Federation the insect collection has been taken on tour to various K-5 science classes, pollinator presentations for the public, and to various nature focused community events.
