Invasive Stiltgrass Removal at Merchants Millpond (Gatesville)

September 6, 2026 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Join NCWF Wildlife Habitat Stewards of Northeastern NC Chapter for a morning of hands-on habitat restoration as we work together to remove invasive Japanese Stiltgrass along the Coleman Trail. This project helps protect the park’s long-term ecological health and prepares the area for a native plant installation later this fall.

Japanese Stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum) is an invasive annual grass introduced to the U.S. in the early 1900s, likely through contaminated packing materials. It spreads quickly along trails, floodplains, and forest understories, forming dense mats that crowd out native understory plants. As it takes over, it reduces habitat quality for insects, amphibians, and groundnesting wildlife making active removal an important step in restoring a healthy, thriving ecosystem.
