Sandy Creek Park Nature Walk (Durham)

May 16, 2026 @ 8:30 am - 10:00 am

Join NCWF Durham Wildlife Stewards Chapter for a guided nature walk at Sandy Creek Environmental Park & Wetlands with chapter leader and Climate Reality Project alumna Betsy Ross. As we hike, we will see many birds such as Yellow-crowned Night Herons, Great Blue Herons and their rookeries, Pileated and Redheaded Woodpeckers, and their nesting cavities. We’ll stop by the unique, hand-painted bird blind created by park volunteer extraordinaire John Goebel. We’ll also see a beaver lodge, Sandy Creek itself, the park’s constructed wetlands, and – if we’re lucky – some amphibians or reptiles. Bring your hiking shoes, binoculars and possibly a bird guidebook or bird identification app, such as Merlin Bird ID, to explore the vast biodiversity of one of Durham’s historic urban environmental gems!
