Watauga Livestake Giveaway (Boone)

March 11, 2026 @ 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Live stakes are cuttings from dormant trees that can grow into new plants along river or stream banks for riparian buffer restoration. In the winter, trees go into dormancy, a natural process where they conserve energy to survive the cold. This is the perfect time for planting live stakes, as the cuttings can focus on growing strong roots before the spring season arrives.

The live staking season typically runs from November to March, where you can plant hardy hardwood stakes that will establish their roots first. These roots stay steady, quietly working underground, and when spring arrives, the stakes burst into life, growing their branches and leaves.

We will be offering bundles of 50 stakes with varieties ranging from Silky Dogwood, Silky Willow, Ninebark, and Elderberry. Instructions on planting will be provided. Live stakes and educational packets are free, but to ensure we have enough live stakes sign up is required.

These live stake giveaways are a partnership between North Carolina Wildlife Federation High Country Wild Chapter, New River Conservancy, Blue Ridge RC&D, and Partners for Fish and Wildlife with support from local Soil and Water Conservation District, Cooperative Extension offices and National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife Program

Registration will be available in February. Stay Tuned!
