Hiking for Habitat: Day 44, May 5

May 5 (25 miles)
25 miles today from Black Mountain Campground to a camp spot near Craggy Gardens Picnic Area. Epic climb up to Mt Mitchell first thing this morning – 6,684 feet. Clear skies and incredible views. I spent a long time relaxing just below the summit among the spruce trees. A full day of hiking with so many sights, smells and fun conversations with fellow hikers. I found an isolated camp spot on a grassy knob with giant boulders scattered all around me. I ate dark chocolate and listened to the birds while the sun went down. The wind was picking up and rain was moving in, but sleep came easy.
