Moth Night (Durham)
July 24, 2026 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm
NCWF Durham Wildlife Stewards Chapter is thrilled to present its first-ever Moth Night, in conjunction with Backyard Butterflies of Hillsborough. We will learn how to photograph moths and upload the photos to iNaturalist. The photos will eventually become research-grade data for scientists to use. We will circulate around three to four moth light trapping stations that are set up along the trails and lit to attract moths. Moths will be continually flying onto the sheets and back off again, so you’ll see something different every time. The focus is not on identifying each moth by its scientific name, but instead on documenting through photography all the moths and insects that land on the sheet. Since you’ll see the moths change position, disappear, and reappear every second, what better way to live in the moment?
Come moth with us! Discover the mysterious nighttime world of moths, and be a citizen scientist who uploads their observations to iNaturalist. Your observations will become part of the first-ever moth survey at Sandy Creek Park!
