Join NCWF Tri-County Conservationists Chapter for a hike at Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area. This 2.7-mile loop will take participants up to an overlook with views of an old quarry site, the Eno River, and the Town of Hillsborough. With the highest elevation in the Triangle, the history, both anthropological and natural, of this area is as rich as the minerals it is compiled of.

This state natural area is named for the Occaneechi, a Native American tribe which calls this area home. The mountain here was partially turned into a quarry and was mined for pyrophillite and other minerals. This gem of a site boasts summer tanagers and vireos in tranquil woodland trails circling the mountain and is graced by goldfinch and woodpecker calls. Be it the rolling tree-covered hills with homes and businesses dotting the valley landscape or the slow-moving Eno River framed by rock formations, this is a place you will not want to miss!
