Atlantic White Cedar Forest Planting (Columbia)

March 14, 2024 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm

The North Carolina Wildlife Federation and Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge invites you to join them in planting thousands of Atlantic white cedar tree seedlings at the refuge’s Millennium Forest on Saturday, March 14th from 3:30 to 5:00 pm.

In 2000, Columbia’s Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft introduced the 7,000 Juniper Project to celebrate the beginning of the third millennium. The purpose of the project was to engage the citizens of Eastern North Carolina in the restoration of the endangered Atlantic white cedar ecosystem by planting 7,000 seedlings within a designated site at Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge that would be known as the Millennium Forest.

Now, twenty four years later, another revitalization project is about to take place in the Millennium Forest. An additional 12 acres of what was previously converted farm fields will be transformed into Atlantic white cedar forest to help restore this tree within its historic range. Here, it will provide crucial wildlife habitat and opportunities for recreation and education for the surrounding community.

Volunteers of all ages are welcome to participate in this exciting tree planting project that will provide the chance to not only plant trees but to also gather together and share wisdom and ideas for how we can all work together to protect and restore North Carolina habitats. NCWF and the refuge will provide all of the needed supplies for this project and restrooms and parking are available across the road at the Red Wolf Center. While the event is free, pre-registration is required. We look forward to seeing you there!
