Studying the New Behavior of Loons in the Carolinas (Matthews)

December 5, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

Once you’ve heard the haunting call of a loon, you’ll never forget it. Those calls can now be heard on Lake Jocassee in South Carolina in the winter. Normally, common loons spend the winter along coastlines, but in recent times, over 100 loons now migrate south to spend the cold season inland, on Lake Jocassee. Our speaker, Brooks Wade, has participated in researching this flock for nearly a decade. There are opportunities for volunteers to participate with the research team in the winter and spring. Wade will tell us about Lake Jocassee, the research being done, and what he’s learned. Wade and his wife, Kay, are founders of Jocassee Wild Outdoor Education, a non-profit dedicated to outdoor education within the Jocassee Gorges, including ongoing loon research through Jocassee Loon Watch.
