Patriot Pier Celebration: Enhancing Habitat and Honoring Veterans at Lake Norman

Patriot Pier

On November 11, 2024, a remarkable event took place at Patriot Pier on Lake Norman—a project designed to celebrate and support veterans while improving aquatic habitats for future generations. This special occasion brought together local officials, military veterans, and community leaders to mark the completion of important habitat enhancements, including the establishment of a rock reef in the lake and modifications to the pier to allow better fishing access for veterans.

The installation of the rock reef at Patriot Pier represents the second of its kind—a shallow water reef designed for public access fishing piers. This decision was largely inspired by the success of the Hager Creek pier reef, which had proven to be an effective means of enhancing aquatic habitats while benefiting local anglers. The positive outcomes at Hager Creek—where the reef attracted a diverse range of fish species and improved the overall fishing experience—served as a model for the project at Patriot Pier.

A Realized Vision for Veterans at Patriot Pier

Patriot Pier was originally constructed in 2018 through a collaborative effort involving Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation, the Town of Cornelius, Duke Energy, and the Patriot Military Family Foundation (PMFF). Its purpose was clear: to provide veterans with a peaceful space to enjoy fishing and connect with the natural beauty of Lake Norman. The pier was an essential element of the Catawba-Wateree Hydroelectric Project FERC License, aimed at both providing recreational access and enhancing local wildlife habitats.

However, the lake bottom surrounding the pier was composed of hard clay, lacking the type of aquatic life necessary for sustaining healthy fish populations. Recognizing this challenge, North Carolina Wildlife Federation (NCWF) received a grant from the Catawba-Wateree Habitat Enhancement Program to improve the area. The initiative involved installing a permanent rock reef to create a more hospitable environment for aquatic species, improving both the ecosystem and the fishing experience for veterans and other anglers.

In addition to the habitat improvement, the pier itself was expanded into a “T” shape at the end. This modification will allow more veterans and anglers to access the pier and enjoy their time on the water.

A Community of Conservation and Camaraderie

The event was attended by a collection of groups and individuals who played pivotal roles in bringing the vision of Patriot Pier to life. Among them was Former Governor Jim Martin, who not only participated in the event but also read a heartfelt letter of appreciation from Senator Thom Tillis. Also present was Major General Chuck Swannack, who, representing the Patriot Military Family Foundation, shared his insights on the importance of the project for veterans and their families.

Local leaders, including officials from Mecklenburg County, the Town of Cornelius PARC and Police Departments, and representatives from Duke Energy were on hand to celebrate the completion of the work. Lancaster Custom Dock and Lift, which contributed construction services and materials for the pier expansion, was also present, with Mark Lancaster sharing his thoughts on the project’s significance. Representatives from the Purple Heart Homes, Reel Heroes Inc., and NCWF were also in attendance, further cementing the collaborative spirit that made the project possible.

The installation of a rock reef at Patriot Pier is a game-changer for Lake Norman’s aquatic ecosystem. These permanent structures will help attract a variety of fish species, including game fish, creating a healthier and more diverse environment. This will lead to improved angler experiences, with higher catch rates and increased fish diversity. Additionally, the expansion of the pier will make it more accessible to veterans and others who rely on the pier for recreation.

Incorporating the “T” shape at the end of the pier ensures that more anglers can participate simultaneously, creating a stronger sense of community and providing ample space for people to engage with nature. It also emphasizes the importance of recognizing veterans and giving them access to recreational spaces that promote healing and camaraderie.

Why This Work Is Important for Wildlife

The lake’s previous hard clay bottom was not ideal for supporting a wide range of wildlife, including the game fish that anglers typically seek. By creating a permanent, structured habitat, the reef will serve as a shelter and breeding ground for various species, increasing the overall health of the lake’s ecosystem. This project not only improves the fishing experience but also fosters biodiversity, ensuring that future generations will benefit from a more robust aquatic environment.

According to Billy Wilson, President of the NCWF Lake Norman Wildlife Conservationists Chapter, “Our military veterans have put their lives on hold and at risk to protect our country. It’s the least we can do to show our appreciation to them by doing what we can to protect and conserve the natural resources of our homeland. Recreational fishing is a cherished American tradition. With this habitat enhancement project, not only are we enhancing Lake Norman’s aquatic habitat, but we are also creating an opportunity for more memorable and enjoyable angler experiences by improving fish habitat and catch rates.”

Honoring Veterans Through Fishing

For veterans, fishing represents much more than a hobby—it’s a chance to relax, reflect, and connect with nature. David Laws, Executive Director for PMFF, expressed his gratitude: “The Patriot Pier has been an important resource for veteran anglers. The establishment of a deep-water rocky habitat for aquatic species will greatly improve the experience for our veterans and the addition of the ‘T’ at the end will allow many more veterans to fish from the pier at the same time. We are grateful to NCWF for this excellent addition to the Patriot Pier.”

The modifications to the pier provide a space where veterans can come together and experience the joy of fishing, in a location designed specifically to accommodate their needs. As Wes Richardson, a veteran from Purple Heart Homes, shared, “I was so honored that REEL Heroes was asked to join the dedication ceremony at Patriots Pier. There is validation in knowing that myself and my fellow Veterans are remembered on November 11th. This was, by far, my most cherished Veterans Day. Thank you for including us and letting us be part of something so special, and bigger than ourselves. I won’t forget it.”

Major General Chuck Swannack also emphasized the impact of such projects on veterans, stating, “Veterans and their families deserve a life commensurate with their civilian counterparts. This project will enhance the habitat and veterans’ love for fishing and the outdoors.”

A Note of Gratitude

A sunset photo of Patriot Pier. The success of the Patriot Pier habitat enhancement project would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of many people and organizations. Lancaster Custom Dock and Lift deserves a special mention for their generous donation of construction services and materials to expand the pier, making the project a reality. Their contribution has allowed this project to serve even more veterans and community members, furthering the mission of providing access to the outdoors.

We also want to thank Reel Heroes Inc. for capturing the event in a video that will help share the story of Patriot Pier with the wider community. Their dedication to honoring veterans and promoting fishing as a form of therapy is invaluable.

As we look ahead to the future, it’s clear that the work at Patriot Pier is only the beginning. The dedication of so many individuals and organizations to improving both wildlife habitats and veterans’ access to recreation ensures that Lake Norman will remain a vibrant and supportive place for both wildlife in North Carolina and the people who cherish it.
