Hunting for Hope: Supporting North Carolinians in Need Through Deer Donations

As Thanksgiving approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on gratitude and community support—values that resonate deeply, especially in these challenging times. This year, as many North Carolinians continue to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the need for assistance in our communities has never been more pressing.

There are many ways in which North Carolinians can step up for those affected by Hurricane Helene. Though sometimes overlooked, there is one powerful way to give back this season, through local deer donations, facilitated by the incredible partnership between NC Hunters for the Hungry and NCWF Community Wildlife Chapters.

Sharing the Harvest

Deer hunting season is upon us, and as hunters take to the outdoors, there’s a unique opportunity to share the harvest. When you donate

your harvested deer to NC Hunters for the Hungry, you’re not just helping those in need; you’re also fostering a spirit of togetherness and resilience in your community at a critical time. Meat donated through this program is distributed locally, ensuring that it directly benefits families facing food insecurity in the area where the deer was harvested, donated, and processed.

Each deer donated translates into meals for families who may be struggling to put food on the table. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many North Carolinians are facing hardships, and your generosity can make a tangible difference in their lives. By donating deer, you are helping to restore hope and nourishment to those who need it most.

A Seamless Process for Hunters

One of the greatest aspects of donating through NC Hunters for the Hungry is the simplicity of the process. When you bring your deer to a NC Hunters for the Hungry network meat processor, there’s never a charge for donating deer. That means you can contribute without any additional financial burden, allowing you to share your harvest without hesitation. All deer harvested in chronic wasting disease (CWD) surveillance areas are tested and must receive a test result of ‘not detected’ prior to distribution of the ground venison. This sampling also provides further data to continue monitoring for CWD in North Carolina.

Deer processors on the NC Hunters for the Hungry network are available throughout the state, both within and outside of CWD surveillance areas, making it easy for hunters to find a convenient location to donate their deer.  Visit the links below to find your nearest deer donation site or to get more information on CWD test sites across the state.
