April 21, Frosted Elfin Survey: NCWF Wildlife Habitat Stewards of Northeastern NC Chapter continued their series of frosted elfin butterfly surveys, in search of these elusive and rare butterflies during their narrow flight window. During this survey, chapter volunteers worked to locate patches of Eastern wild indigo (Baptisia tinctoria), the other local host plant for frosted elfins, only to find that the few recorded patches have yet to flower this year, making them behind their usual bloom window. Volunteers still enjoyed observing a variety of pollinators, like the pictured common buckeye, and a few orbweavers on lupine!

March 7, New River State Park Planting: High Country Wild in partnership with New River Conservancy, New River State Park, and Keep Ashe Beautiful hosted a workday along a tributary feeding into the New River. Over 20 volunteers planted hundreds of livestakes along with bareroot and potted trees. Species included elderberry, silky willow, silky dogwood, sycamore, red maple, beech, hemlock, white oak, and more! These native species will help shade the water, improve water quality, stabilize the soil, and provide habitat for the wildlife that call New River State Park home. It was a warm and fun day and all the volunteers were treated to a hot dog lunch

Mount Jefferson State Natural Area in November 2025: NCWF High Country Wild alongside New River Conservancy, Keep Ashe Beautiful, and State Parks hosted a volunteer planting day along Naked Creek in Ashe County. With support from environmental science students at Oak Hill Academy, we planted over 2,000 native trees and shrubs!
